Successful Initiatives for Rotokawa School.
During the past few years in our mainstream classes, Rotokawa School, supported and funded by RTLBs has been focussing on language in the early years.

In relation to our Immersion and Bilingual classes we have successfully run the following initiatives to enhance Literacy and Numeracy for our Maori children. This has been mainly funded by the Ngati Whakaue Education Endowment Trust Board. Our BOT, Parent Support group and Whanau Support Group have also made contributions to this.
Oral Language Screening Tool: KLST 2
The KLST 2 is an American designed oral language screening tool that provides norms for students aged 4.5-7.0. It takes 15 minutes to test a child and 5 minutes to analyse the results. For more information please contact Mary Hall (maryrtlb@xtra.co.nz)

This is an innovative game involving the principle of movement for learning. The age range is Year 2 -8. The implementation takes minutes to explain and set up. The strategy of Co-operative Learning is the foundation. The directions require group practice. The concept was presented by Mike Scadden : Nurturing Young Brains and the Importance of Movement 5.02.04 and adapted by Adrienne Rosoman RTLB. Read, Retell, Record, Respond…..(The 4 R’s) Is a Writing Programme devised by Sue Francis, Western Heights PrimaryThis programme is designed to provide an in-depth individualised intervention for students with minimal skills to approach their written language tasks.Multi Data is gathered to provide evidence to assist the individual intervention structure. Junior Graduation was introduced in 2005 to recognise the efforts made by students in their junior years and to further involve by Year 9 and 10 students in activities outside the classroom and outside the school.

Lynmore Primary PE
Lynmore Primary has created a full time Physical Education and Sport teacher to give consistency to programmes and promote active children.
Upper Atiamuri Egypt Project
During this year we trialled a school-wide term long afternoon programme based on ‘ Egypt’. The programme was an enormous success and all our students were fully immersed in Action Learning to produce an amazing display of what they had found out. A trip to Auckland Museum to ‘Beyond the Tomb’ added interest.

5 Rotorua East Schools: Lynmore, Owhata, Rotokawa, Lake Rotoma, Whangamarino Schools worked collaboratively with RTLB to raise Oral language achievement for years 0-1 students.
